Zola lay stiff and tense in the tent. The distant shouting and the scream she’d heard made her insides feel brittle. It sounded like someone on the warpath. If the man she’d heard was anything like Henderson, he could strike out at innocent people out of sheer bad temper. The canvas of her tent bowed in and out in the wind. It was frail protection from any sort of attack—human or animal. If the wagon wasn’t so narrow, she would climb in there and squeeze in beside Ma and Pa. She listened for any more of those angry sounds. Those were frightening enough, but the scream that followed sent shivers up and down her spine even now. She’d heard the fear in that sound. Someone being hurt.

A shuffling sound brought her to a sitting position, her hands to her chest as if she could calm the frantic beating of her heart.

She strained toward the sound. It came from the horse corral. One of the horses getting settled, no doubt.

Where was Levi? Close enough she could call to him for help?

She forced herself to lie back. Forced herself to be calm. She didn’t need Levi to protect her. She didn’t need—nor did she want—any man—

Nearby, someone coughed.

She smiled. Levi was that close. She whispered a prayer for safety and protection, recited a verse from Psalm twenty-four. ‘The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.’ He would protect them.
